Winter's Coming
The inner journey is about to begin
Winter’s coming, they said
You can feel it
like a quilt Grandma Time is about to spread over you
a weighted blanket,
the kind you can’t easily kick off
an ominous feeling above
thick clouds, gray covering
smothering yet espousing love
Winter’s coming, they said
yet we still stand in fall
freefall and technicolor transformation
surrounded by a dazzling display
on a Persian rug of oranges and yellows
a magic carpet of leaf liminality
the psychedelics are about to kick in
you can’t fight them,
you won’t win
Winter’s coming, they said
like your friend whispering, “I am starting to feel it”
Reality is beginning to bend
to the increasing distance from sun
the only way now is to surrender
Embrace the pressure
Welcome the weight
You don’t have to hold it,
but you can’t outrun it
Winter’s coming, they said
I think maybe winter scared me before
that’s why I fled to sunny places
hiding from the reminder of death
Autumn gives us a little dance
before everything goes dormant
just trying to make it through
this burgeoning, bleak time
to welcome the frozen informant
Winter’s coming, they said
and I didn’t fight it this time
It’s real, it’s intense
this forced hibernation
impending illumination
of inner mysteries and memories weaved
into the homemade quilt nature made us
to review the seasons past perceived

We still have 53 days left of autumn thankfully. I get bummed out that the fall is rushed through bc of the corporations pushing Christmas. The only thing I can do is ignore it and go outside to see that yes, it's not winter yet. Winters used to be hard on me until I embraced them as necessary and started to enjoy what it represents. This year will be the coldest winter I have ever experienced in my 55 years of life and I am praying for massive amounts of snow. I hope I will never become a snowbird and will always lean into hardcore winters. We shall see come springtime if I can handle Montana winters. 😆
Absolutely your best yet! I’ve always favored content over construct but I have to mention this; the rhythm and flow, the meter, of this piece is awesome. This is what I strive for in my own writing. It reminds me of the kind of rap I love, best exemplified by Eminem, the easy pace and the return to refrain. Brava!!! 💖
